It takes 20 - 40 hours of mentorship, exercises and repetitious practice to become basically proficient with the airbrush and equipment, but students may and will likely still require an expert available to troubleshoot problems. It can reasonably take up to 80 - 120 hours of mentorship, exercises and repetitious practice to become moderately proficient with the airbrush where the student will not need an instructor in situations. Some students acquire proficiency earlier than 120 hours and some students acquire it later on.
With a love of teaching and of airbrushing and a natural aptitude for them both, I provide an adaptive, fun learning environment that is safe and productive. I have a VSC 3 certification by Toronto Police Services. My goal is to get students as proficient with airbrush as quickly as possible by working with the student's strengths and weaknesses. In my 40 years of airbrushing and teaching others, I have found that the best way to do this is in a one on one, in person, hands on tutoring format but video lessons are possible when needed.
Before class begins, students are provided with an information booklet that explains what the student can expect in each learning session. In the first hour/s of learning, students will begin using the airbrush immediately to paint dots and lines repetitiously, and in this process, the student's technique and form will be refined. The student will see very quickly how the dots and lines quickly turn into basic lettering and images.
During teaching, a massive amount of relevant topics come up in conversation such as about airbrushing history, types of airbrushes, types of paints and so much more. An hour long teaching session flies by so fast that it's over too quickly until next class. The ideal teaching amount is 4 hour learning blocks and the minimum block of time is 1 hour. Every additional class builds upon the steady progress of the student and each class incrementally adds more techniques and tricks. Students progress from dots and lines and stick figures, to rendering basic lettering with effects, to finally being able to freehand paint a scene like the classic beach scene.
Students practice mostly on paper but will eventually and gradually be introduced to airbrushing onto clothing, walls and other surfaces with different types of paints and inks. Students learn how to use different mediums such as screen printing with airbrushing, computers and digital art with airbrushing, production painting with an airbrush and much more, depending upon the student's interest.
